About the Exhibit
The Nelsons are recognized throughout the West as major collectors and have donated significant paintings, artifacts, and books to numerous museums, historical societies, and public schools throughout the country.
The exhibition at the Hockaday will offer a fascinating journey through time with works of notable artists including Charles Marion Russell, O.C. Seltzer, Edgar S. Paxson, Charles Fritz, Fred Fellows, John Fery, Joseph Henry Sharp, Carl Rungius, Edward Borein and many others.  Items on display will include unique items such as illustrated hand-written letters and sketches by the artists who introduced the American West to the world.  Artifacts from the indigenous peoples of the West and Southwest will also be on display.
Dr. Nelson has been directly involved with early western art  and has observed the progression of several western museums, including The Russell in Great Falls.  “What our overall impact has been is to try to tie in the best way that we can to keep artifacts in Montana. We have never sold artifacts. We have given them away to Museums that have a like interest”.
The Nelsons have been ardent supporters of the Hockaday Museum of Art for many years. In 2006, they presented the Museum  with a very generous gift of  “Young Boy” a Russell painting.  C.M. Russell painted Young Boy and gave it to Dr. Hitchcock who was a longtime friend for taking care of him. The Nelsons bought the painting from him in 1967. Young Boy is installed on permanent display in the Hockaday’s Crown of the Continent Gallery.
