 John Hughes
John Hughes is a nationally known artist who has been painting for over 35 years. His studio is in Taylorsville, Utah, where he lives with his wife Teresa of 38 years.

John’s love of life and nature inspires his paintings of the American West and other locations of the world that he has had the great fortune of visiting and depicting on canvas.

"Art is a way to fill the soul through the eyes of the beholder," he says. "The artist, on the other hand, is in the unique position of receiving and conveying that gift through all of their senses."

Born in New York City, he spent most of his early years in beautiful Westchester County, in the little town of Ossining, New York. After high school graduation, John spent four years in the United States Navy, before moving to the coastal city of Ventura, California, with his family. After college, he and his wife lived in Ventura and Big Bear California for several years before relocating to Utah, where he now sets out in any direction to paint the spectacular landscapes of the greater Rocky Mountain region.

John’s love for the vistas of the intermountain West along with coastal and marine scenes, keep him busy and happy painting in these thrilling environments. His work has been influenced by many of the early California Plein Air Impressionists, through his associations with students of that early group of artists. He has studied with many of the top artists of our time and has spent countless hours in the field honing his skills.

The artist is a member of the Plein Air Painters of Utah, Rocky Mountain Plein Air Painters and the American Impressionist Society. He is represented by Montgomery Lee Fine Art in Park City, Utah, and Mountain Trails Gallery in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

John is also a highly sought out instructor and currently teaches landscape painting classes for Salt Lake Community College and the Scottsdale Artist School along with private workshops and classes.

John’s work has been featured in Plein Air Magazine, Pratique des Arts, Fibonacci Fine Arts Digest, 15 Bytes magazine, Outdoor Painter and Artist’s on Art. He also writes “how to tips” for other artists and has had numerous columns about plein air painting in some of these same publications. Visit the artist's website.
