About the Exhibit
The tensions created between artists painting the tranquil landscape and artists painting the turbulent landscape, both historically and contemporarily, has significantly informed Mullenix’s work. Derived from photographs of trees, generally found in publication and digitally manipulated, Mullenix enlarges these images using photocopies – emphasizing the dot matrix of the print process. The end result is that the final image is partially photographic, partially hand rendered, and almost always pixilated into a photograph translated into paint. The process becomes a metaphor to help us better understand the unknown and the known familiarity of objects that surround us in nature.
