Sally Vannoy of Bigfork captures 1st Place this year with her oil painting, The Patriarch. Sally says “I have been so fortunate to call the Flathead Valley home since a young child. Growing up here has shaped me into who I am today. I developed a great love for the outdoors and wildlife. Whether it be hiking, biking, riding horses, fishing, kayaking or painting en plein air, I love being in the great outdoors. Since I could hold a crayon, I have been drawing and into the use of color. My paintings are like a journal of my life. We are surrounded by such beauty everywhere and it is my hope to capture this through my paint. My paintings often include: landscapes, wildlife and western way of life.” Sally is awarded a $250 cash prize for the top honors.

Big Horn County Suncatcher, a watercolor by Columbia Falls resident Jessica Glenn, took the 2nd Place $100 cash prize. Having grown up on the East Coast and settling in the mountains of Montana, she’s developed an appreciation for antiquated structures and their enduring craftsmanship. She says “everywhere are the relics of functional, yet aesthetic designs from our bygones, leaving records of how we’ve carved out a culture from the surrounding landscape. I am also drawn to structural forms in the wild, like the angles in the woodland and peaks where sunlight grazes.” Her realistic style of painting is represented by her crisply rendered, textural details of her subjects.

Whitefish artist Rob Akey claimed 3rd Place honors with his oil painting, Sunday Morning in Butte featuring a quiet beginning to a day in Montana’s Copper City. Rob grew up on the prairies and mountains of Montana. He’s spent youthful summers working steel gangs, trail crews and harvesting wheat. Akey has hiked much of Glacier National Park. He paints his native Montana to elevate and preserve her magnificence. Rob takes home a $50 cash prize.

About the Exhibit
Come meet the artist next door. Hockaday members who are artists, by vocation or by avocation, exhibit one piece of their artwork in the media of their choice, created in the past year. The public is invited to attend the opening reception on November 12, enjoy the many pieces of recently created art, and cast a vote for their favorite. Voting will continue through November 28 at 5:00 PM (the close of the Thanksgiving Community Open House). The Winter 2015 Members Salon exhibition will yield three People’s Choice Award winners to be announced November 28. The chosen 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners will be awarded prizes (1st Place - $250, 2nd Place - $100, 3rd Place - $50).
