The Flathead Valley Premiere of
Winter in the Blood
a benefit for the Hockaday Museum of Art

Winter in the Blood (Official Trailer) from Andrew & Alex Smith on Vimeo.

Winter in the Blood was the first of five novels written by James Welch, a Native American poet, author, documentary scriptwriter and historical essayist. Winter in the Blood is the story of Virgil First Raise, whose life struggles lead him on a journey to grasp the truth of his origins.  Montana natives Alex and Andrew Smith grew up knowing James Welch, who was a life-long friend, mentor and profound influence on the twin brothers.  The directors shot the film on the Hi-Line of Montana where the novel was born.  The film, featured in numerous film festivals, is recognized as a successful vision quest for the directors in their bringing Welch’s world of honest characters and tragicomic plot to the big screen.

Backstory for the Flathead Valley Premiere
Denny Kellogg is a Bigfork resident and Vice President of the Board for the Hockaday Museum of Art.  Denny was approached by Alex and Andrew Smith, the twin brothers who directed Winter in the Blood, to loan them artifacts from his personal collection as props to make the movie more authentic.  After attending the Missoula premiere of WITB, Denny and Kitty Kellogg thought it would be a perfect fit for the Flathead as the movie fits well into the Hockaday’s mission.

Art and artifacts from the Kellogg Collection featured in the film will be on display for the Bigfork premiere only.

SYNOPSIS
Virgil First Raise (Chaske Spencer) wakes in a ditch on the hardscrabble plains of Montana, hungover and badly beaten. He returns home to his ranch on the reservation, only to find that his wife, Agnes, (Julia Jones) has left him. Worse, she's taken his beloved rifle. Virgil sets out to town find her— or perhaps just the gun— beginning a hi-line odyssey of inebriated and possibly imagined intrigues in town with the mysterious 'Airplane Man', (David Morse) a beautiful barmaid, and two dangerous Men in Suits. Are they real? Or spirits guiding him away from his true path? Virgil's quest brings him face-to-face with childhood memories of his beloved, lost brother Mose.

Twin directors Alex and Andrew Smith, in their first movie since The Slaughter Rule, (which introduced the world to Ryan Gosling and Amy Adams) have made a hauntingly beautiful film that is true to the lyrical and unflinching spirit of James Welch’s classic 1974 novel of Native American life.
